Speed to lead in commercial finance: the first five minutes decide the deal
Business owner intent peaks the second they submit an enquiry. Here is what the data says about calling speed, and the systems that keep brokers inside the five minute window.
Most commercial finance enquiries have a shelf life measured in minutes, not days. A business owner decides they need funding, opens a tab, fills in two or three forms, and answers the phone that rings first. Whatever happens in the following five minutes tends to decide who wins the deal.
We generate exclusive leads for UK commercial finance brokers every day, and the pattern never changes: the brokers who call within minutes book the meetings, and the brokers who call the next morning inherit a colder prospect.
Why the first five minutes win
Business owners researching funding behave like buyers with a deadline. They usually explore options during a quiet gap in their working day, and that gap closes fast.
Three things happen in the minutes after submission:
- Intent peaks at submission. The problem is front of mind, the pain is fresh, and the person who just filled in the form still remembers every number they typed. Every minute that passes cools the memory and the motivation.
- Competitors are calling too. Even with an exclusive lead, applicants often compare lenders directly. The first credible conversation usually sets the tone.
- Context fades. Call back the next morning and you are a stranger asking about something they researched yesterday. Call within five minutes and you are the helpful expert continuing a conversation they chose to start.
The maths is unforgiving. A lead worked at minute three is worth several times a lead worked at hour three. That difference compounds across every lead in a monthly volume, and it is often the gap between a profitable campaign and an expensive one.
What actually slows brokers down
Very few brokers intend to be slow. Slow happens for structural reasons:
- Leads arrive in a shared inbox that nobody owns.
- New enquiries land in a CRM field that does not trigger an alert.
- The person who should call is in a meeting, and there is no fallback.
- Nobody measures time to first contact, so nobody notices the drift.
None of these are motivation problems. They are process problems, and process problems have process fixes.
How we protect speed to lead
Every lead we deliver reaches the broker''s CRM in under 60 seconds, by SMS and email, with the full enquiry attached. The lead is 1:1 exclusive, so there is no race against other buyers, and the business owner knows their case has been assigned to a named brokerage.
The broker''s side of the bargain is simple:
- Route the lead to a phone that gets answered. A named person, not a queue.
- Set a five minute service level. If the primary caller is busy, a second number gets the call.
- Call, do not text first. The first touch should be a conversation.
- If there is no answer, try again within the hour, then twice the same day. Our leads average a 91% answer rate, so persistence is rewarded.
- Log time to first contact and review it weekly. What gets measured gets fixed.
The compounding effect
Brokers who work our leads quickly convert around 16% of them into funded cases, which is roughly 13x ROI on the leads they buy. That number is not produced by the lead alone. It is produced by the lead plus a fast, human first call.
A high quality lead handed to a slow process is a wasted opportunity. A good lead handed to a five minute process is a client.
If you want to see how fast our leads arrive and how the handoff works in practice, book an introduction call and we will walk you through it.
